About the role

The Transport team is responsible for planning, executing and tracking of all the transport of goods in Tesco. The Transport team designs and implements systems and services for allocating vehicles based on capacity management for distribution from depots into the stores as well from the stores into the customers door step.

With more than £2Billion GBP spent on transportation, it is an ideal opportunity for designing better fleet utilization software to unlock huge savings. The team is also implementing advanced algorithms for vehicle routing and tracking to minimize fuel expenses as well as to provide real time delivery tracking information to customers.

You will be responsible for

Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and measures:

  • Accountable for the Transport product subset, involving multiple internal/external stakeholder management, driving product strategy, managing a roadmap and execution by leading a team of talented Product Managers.
  • Understanding both customer and business stakeholders and their pain points really well and steer the team in the right direction by putting best team members in the most value generating products/ business priorities.
  • Set clear goals and OKRs for team members and periodically review all the KPIs owned by the team.
  • Handle conflicting priorities well, communicate clearly and drive a high level of focus and excellence with a strong, talented and opinionated team.
  • Identify and remove impediments faced by the team by working with the Head of Product / other stakeholders and proactively flag up any risks/ delays in the commitments.
  • Contribute in capability and capacity planning for Product Management to ensure capacity to deliver.
  • Build and nurture a great team of Product Managers based on business needs, strategic priorities assigned, and level of focus required.
  • Carry out people routines for direct reports (Product Managers) and develop talented people.
  • Motivate the team by ensuring they have fulfilling roles, proper rewards and recognition strategies.
  • Conduct fair performance appraisals and provide constructive feedback for the team and individuals.
  • Collaborate with Head of Product to understand future demand and direction.
  • Responsible for achieving or exceeding agreed product improvements across all the Products owned/ managed by the team.
  • This role will best suit an individual who enjoys working as part of a team, is well organised, pragmatic and a lateral thinker with an inquisitive mind who is motivated to make change for the better and, most importantly, puts our customers first.

You will need

  • Have proven success in leading a team of highly talented product managers and took multiple ideas (at least 1 new product/idea) from conception to go-live, through standard software product development lifecycle and got measurable success across defined KPIs.
  • Experienced in capacity planning, forecasting and working with senior stakeholders to understand future demand and align allocation/ hiring.
  • Good domain expertise in the relevant functional area/ a large complex domain.
  • Efficient in stakeholder management and has ability to steer the team in the right direction by putting best team members in the most value generating Products/ Business priorities.
  • Knowledge and experience of product management best practice and methodologies and strong technical acumen.
  • Technically competent to influence and understand the solution context and approach and aid engineering in estimating the complexity of work being requested.
  • Understand the impact Tech debt causes and the value Tech upgrades can bring in, and can hold objective conversations with technology counterparts to prioritize it during any sprint.
  • Have great prioritization and decision making skills and have made good decisions/ judgements around business priorities and resource allocation, etc.
  • Experience in conducting fair appraisals and handling conflicts.
  • Experience in building/ hiring, grooming a team of Product Managers, UX, UI and Data Analysts.
