The role plays a key part in delivering the Retail People Safety strategy through practical, data‑led solutions that strengthen legal compliance, risk management and safety culture. You’ll lead and manage safety projects and Retail People Safety Management Systems, ensuring full alignment with ISO 45001 and Tesco safety standards.

Working collaboratively with Store Operations, Cafés, our Property and wider Group functions, you’ll drive consistency, embed best practice and support the development of a positive, proactive safety culture for both colleagues and customers.

You will be responsible for

  • Delivering safety projects and improvement initiatives aligned to the Retail and wider Group Safety Strategy, with clear scope, governance and measurable outcomes.

  • Working closely with Retail and Café safety sponsors, operational and regional teams, USDAW, Property, Engineering, Maintenance and Group Safety to support consistent and effective delivery.

  • Using insight from incidents, audits, colleague feedback and data to identify emerging risks and support targeted, evidence‑based improvements across stores and cafés.

  • Supporting the integration of safe ways of working and positive safety culture into retail operations and change activity, engaging early to help design safety in from the outset.

  • Coordinating Retail Safety Governance activity, including drafting and maintaining Safety Management System documentation and supporting engagement through governance forums.

  • Providing specialist Retail People Safety advice across retail operations, Tesco Cafés and Design Standards Governance to support safe design and reduced risk.

  • Developing and delivering Retail People Safety communications and awareness activity to support clear, engaging and actionable safety priorities.

  • Supporting improvements in safety culture and capability, including training, learning from incidents and continuous improvement.

  • Preparing Investment Committee papers to support safety funding requests and managing budgets and forecasts for assigned safety projects.

  • Providing regular updates and assurance to the Lead Retail People Safety Manager on progress, risks and delivery outcomes.

You will need

  • Experience supporting or delivering projects or programmes, with strong planning and organisational skills.
  • The ability to build positive working relationships and engage a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Clear communication and presentation skills, including the ability to present information to senior stakeholders.
  • Experience with risk assessment and risk management, within a safety, operational or change environment.
  • Experience writing policies, processes or formal documentation.
  • Confidence working with data, trends and insights to inform decisions and recommendations.
  • Experience preparing reports and papers to support governance or decision‑making.
  • Experience in a retail, café or fast‑paced customer‑focused environment (desirable).
  • A recognised safety qualification such as NEBOSH, or equivalent (desirable).
