About the role
At Tesco, we’re committed to keeping our colleagues, customers and equipment safe every day. As a Compliance Assessor – PUWER, you’ll play a key role in delivering safe, legal and reliable equipment across our estate.
You’ll be accountable for delivering PUWER compliance, exceptional service, equipment assessments and remediation across around 3,800 retail sites. Working closely with our Heads of Maintenance, you’ll help drive our maintenance and compliance strategy, support continuous improvement, and ensure our estate remains safe, legal and fully functioning for customers, colleagues and stakeholders. You’ll also be a trusted partner to our field teams, providing expert guidance and hands‑on support where it matters most.

You will be responsible for
Delivering PUWER assurance across your region
Carrying out PUWER assurance activities including site inspections, validation checks, evidence reviews, and producing clear, accurate assurance reports.
Ensuring all assessments align with PUWER regulations, British Standards, and Tesco internal requirements.
Supporting safe and compliant equipment
Reviewing and validating contractor scopes and quotations for PUWER inspections and remedial works (guarding, control systems, isolation, interlocks).
Acting as the regional PUWER subject matter expert, supporting Maintenance teams across all equipment types and disciplines.
Completing on‑site post‑completion reviews to ensure remedial works meet statutory and internal standards.
Driving national consistency and improvement
Supporting national governance of PUWER Regulations 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 11 & 18, helping maintain consistent inspection quality, competence, and evidence management.
Contributing to the development and standardisation of PUWER procedures, ensuring ACoP‑aligned controls for guarding, equipment selection, control systems, isolation, and safety markings.
Identifying regional and systemic PUWER trends and supporting targeted improvement plans.
Working with our partners and internal teams
Collaborating with Tesco Business Solutions Bengaluru on supplier coordination, booking processes, remediation tracking, documentation flow, and compliance reporting.
Providing PUWER input into design, procurement, and asset selection to ensure suitability, risk identification, and alignment with LOLER/PSSR.
Partnering with Property Field Teams to prioritise remedials, coordinate site access, validate risk, and ensure timely closeout of actions.
Supporting safety, compliance, and operational performance
Maintaining accurate regional PUWER documentation and audit‑ready evidence trails.
Supporting incident investigations involving work equipment, providing technical PUWER expertise for root cause analysis and corrective actions.
Helping improve PUWER systems and technology, including registers, automation, scheduling, and evidence‑pack standardisation.
Enabling regional performance improvements by reducing downtime, enhancing safety, and maintaining statutory compliance.
Being mobile and hands‑on
Travelling frequently across your region to complete inspections, assurance reviews, and post‑remedial verification activities.

You will need
Strong understanding of PUWER regulations and associated British Standards.
Experience assessing work equipment, guarding, control systems, and safety‑related remedial works.
Confidence working with contractors, suppliers, and internal teams.
Ability to interpret technical information and turn it into clear, actionable guidance.
A proactive, organised approach with a passion for doing the right thing.
