Join a team of hard-working and versatile engineers as a Software Development Engineer. You will contribute to the development of Tesco's next-generation customer-facing web applications, working closely with Product Managers. Your role will be crucial in shaping our products, solving challenges, and designing scalable, performant, and maintainable technical solutions. The global reach of the products you build will impact millions of customers.

Equivalent experience in DevOps, React, Redux, Node, GraphQL, Styled-components, Webpack, Cypress, Docker, or Azure DevOps is acceptable.
You will be responsible for
- Developing scalable and robust frontend systems using your deep expertise in JavaScript, React, Node, and related technologies.
- Optimizing code performance through profiling and continuous improvements.
- Developing features through a systematic approach that emphasizes quality and continuous improvement.
- Applying standard methodologies like SOLID principles to produce maintainable, high-quality software.
- Refactoring code to enhance understanding and maintainability, ensuring clear and efficient workflows with minimal guidance.
- Translating requirements into tasks and code, ensuring alignment with product goals and customer needs.
- Delivering high-quality code for rapid development and integrating continuous delivery practices (CICD) into your workflow.
- Committing code early and often, following version control and branching strategies to enable collaborative and efficient development.
- Automating processes by default, including testing, deployment, and monitoring, to ensure seamless operations.
- Writing secure, scalable, and maintainable code, following standard methodologies for code quality.
- Implementing relevant project instrumentation, continuously improving product performance and user satisfaction.
- Leading and participating in design discussions, understanding the broader domain and collaborating closely with Product Managers to prioritize outcomes that provide value.
- Supporting production systems, diagnosing issues, performing root cause analysis, and ensuring the stability and scalability of our solutions.
- Debugging complex problems and providing ongoing support for the software solution.
- Sharing knowledge within the engineering community, contributing to a collaborative and inclusive culture of learning and improvement.
- Mentoring and developing others, fostering a growth mindset and supporting colleagues at all levels of experience.
- Building proof-of-concept projects to assess and experiment with new tools, technologies, and approaches.
You will need
We’re looking for individuals who are passionate about technology, curious about new trends, and eager to grow and innovate. You might have contributed to open-source projects and maintained an active presence on GitHub. You bring diverse experiences across platforms and technologies. Ideally, you’ll have:
- 5+ years of commercial experience as a Frontend Software Developer, with a proven track record of building scalable web applications.
- Proficiency in standard methodologies for web development, encompassing semantic HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and related technologies.
- Experience with JavaScript frameworks and libraries such as React, Redux, Webpack, React Router, and testing tools like React Testing Library, Jest, Cypress, Jasmine, Enzyme, or Mocha.
- Experience in using Node.js to create high-traffic applications, with knowledge of frameworks such as Express.js, Sails, or Koa.
- A strong understanding of responsive and adaptive web design, ensuring your applications perform well across multiple viewports.
- Familiarity with standard methodologies for UI performance, optimizing load times and user interactions.
- Experience in integrating REST API endpoints and consuming third-party services effectively.
- Deep knowledge of web accessibility standards, ensuring inclusivity and usability across devices, browsers, and platforms.
- A commitment to writing clean, modular, and maintainable code that is easy to extend and enhance over time.
- Experience with DevOps methodologies, contributing to the smooth integration of development and operational workflows.
- Familiarity with Lean and Agile principles, including BDD, ATDD, and TDD, and their application to product development and continuous delivery.
