About the role

We're looking for a passionate, curious, and self-driven Senior UX Designer to join out multidisciplinary team.

The we do work supports teams across multiple areas of the business including physical stores, online, supply chain, marketing and Clubcard. So, you’ll really need to know your onions. That includes a big appetite for human-centred design, user-research and data and analytics. Collaboration mixed with expertise and insight is our recipe for success at Tesco. So, you’ll be working with some of the finest UX and UI designers, researchers, UX writers, service designers, data-science and analytics experts, product managers and developers.

You’ll need experience working on and with Design Systems, whether it's just a pinch to improve a prototype or a big dollop to shape and deliver a whole user journey.

You will be responsible for

  • The primary focus of this role is to work on the user experience of AI assisted decision making tools within Tesco using the design system to create the user interface.
  • You will be expected to drive innovation and take ownership of projects using new technologies with a view to improving business processes and the design system, with a specific focus on artificial intelligence.
  • Work alongside UX researchers to help your team develop empathy for our users, including those with a disability, and advocate for their needs.
  • Run light-weight research such as validating designs via A/B testing, unmoderated, usability testing, etc.
  • With support from UI designers in the team, be confident using Figma to create UI designs using the Digital Design System, build prototypes and test functionality.
  • Own large and small projects from start to finish, redefining complicated experiences into simple and intuitive solutions
  • Own all end-to-end design process activities including discovery, running design sprints, sketching, wire-framing, low-fidelity prototyping, and service/user mapping.
  • Champion human centred design inside and outside of your team.
  • Work within and across agile squads to design, develop and improve the user experience across our digital products.
  • Use quantitative data and partner with the analytics team to help inform your work.
  • Promote inclusive design practices and deliver accessible designs.
  • Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, engaging and finding new opportunities for improvements.
  • Collaborate with different disciplines. You will work closely with UI designers, researchers, engineers, product managers, data scientists & analysts, and business stakeholders to explore, build and deliver designs.
  • Facilitate partner (business and user) workshops, run appropriate conceptualisation and participatory design sessions.
  • Deliver valuable, high-quality, and consistent work without sacrificing speed by using our Digital Design System and its standardised foundations, components, and patterns.
  • Use your user focused approach to help improve and evolve all key aspects of the design system user experience.
  • Find ways to measure the impact of design and the design system and help create a culture of evidence driven decision making.
  • Working with the design system team, help develop self-serve and onboarding tools for the users of the Design System.
  • You will help other disciplines understand the value design can bring to a project to build the best products.
  • Provide feedback to other designers to help strengthen your team and Tesco as a whole.
  • You will help your teammates build context, strong decision-making skills, and empathy for our users.

You will need

  • 5+ years UX design experience
  • Strong experience in high-profile design projects in ideally an enterprise / data visualisation / AI tools environment (additional experience in design for customer facing, commercial environment a plus).
  • A strong, well-curated portfolio demonstrating your expertise across web, responsive and native apps.
  • Passion for solving product problems while balancing all facets of a user experience, including strategy and research, information architecture, interaction design and accessibility.
  • A good understanding of the end-to-end iterative design process including how to develop and use design research, journey mapping, wire-framing, prototyping, and user testing to achieve human-centred design solutions.
  • Proficiency in interaction design for web (desktop and mobile) and native applications
  • Experience of designing with accessibility in mind and meeting WCAG 2.1 level AA.
  • Experience collaborating closely with multiple disciplines including product and engineering.
  • Self-motivation, and good organisational and time-management skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to present skills to all levels of seniority and subject area experts within the organisation.
  • The ability to coach, mentor and set standards for ways of working for more junior team members.
  • Proficiency with current industry design and collaboration tools, such as Figma and Miro.
  • A working knowledge of: Jira, Confluence, Adobe Creative Suite
  • Previous experience in the retail sector is an advantage.
