About the role

Tesco’s Digital Design System team (DDS) is a centralized team responsible for designing and developing reusable components across Web, iOS, and Android, used across our digital estate, and seen by millions of customers and colleagues. You are a system designer/thinker, who will collaborate with a team of multi-disciplinary designers where you will consult, govern, and deliver component specifications for our web libraries. You have a strong eye for design and attention to detail, while understanding the technical requirements to bridge the gap between design and engineering. You bring a systematic, scalable design approach to your work, considering how best to deliver component libraries, layouts, templates, and icons that scale across numerous platforms and products. Above all, you love what you do.

You must be proactive, creative, flexible, resilient, and able to handle high levels of complexity and ambiguity. You will champion our design system and invent and simplify a set of mechanisms, building blocks and tools that empower designers and engineers building the future experiences for our colleagues and customers. Our design & engineering community are at the heart of the DDS. We earn the trust of others within DDS to foster an environment of inclusion and openness, allowing everyone to do their best and help our customers a little every day.

You will be responsible for

  • Collaborate with the DDS team to design and maintain our Web libraries with responsive components by using variants, tokens, and other organizing principles
  • Build a flexible, reusable component structure that is suitable for both designers and developers
  • Help plan tasks against team objectives and key projects
  • Develop and maintain detailed user-interface specifications and design patterns
  • Create and maintain end user documentation describing the standards and best practices of our component library as a reference for designers and developers
  • Work with designers to identify opportunities for unifying designs across products, building out components that work across the Tesco business areas.
  • Be the voice of the Digital Design System (DDS) for designers in other teams, helping them use the system to produce brilliant work
  • Implement and maintain processes for scaling, updating, managing various parts of a design system
  • Demonstrate strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills to all levels of seniority and disciplines within the organisation.
  • Proactively share and communicate design expertise and knowledge with your peers and teams
  • Ability to constructively critique design

You will need

  • Bachelor's degree in UX Design or related design discipline.
  • Minimum of 3 years of professional experience designing digital products, system design, user experience
  • A positive, constructive can-do attitude
  • Strong ability to work within a defined design system and style
  • A solid understanding of existing design systems such as Material design, and Fluent Design & an obsession with digital trends and design
  • A clean design aesthetic and the ability to simplify the complex
  • Strong visual design sensibility
  • Strong attention to detail, and a passion for building quality products
  • Collaborate with peers in and out of the discipline
  • Strong problem-solving and organization skills
  • The ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Some technical background is a strong plus
