About the role

Our engineering team at Tesco deliver first class solutions to over 5000 Tesco stores and in excess of 40 Distribution Centres in five countries. We are responsible for setting standards and delivering innovation in the entire Tesco estate. It is the skills and knowledge of our people that make us one of the leading retail engineering teams in the world.

We are currently recruiting a Head of Automation position to work with internal and external teams to drive our automation strategy across a wide variety of applications.

Based out of Head Office at Welwyn Garden City with travel within the EU and beyond.  

You will be responsible for

Leading the planning & delivery of multiple complex, large-scale projects that span across the Tesco estate working with Distribution Operations teams, Change teams, Engineering, Maintenance, Property, IT, Technology and industry specialists.

This opportunity will focus on leading our automation strategy and providing clear guidance on equipment selection and ensuring the application suitability.

You will work alongside senior stakeholders (Distribution and Engineering Heads, Property Directors etc) to enable our change programmes and ensure projects are delivered to the agreed specification, timelines and budget.

You will need

The successful individual will have an in depth technical understanding of current and up and coming technologies and a track record of implementing these in a previous role. With great collaboration and communication skills, you will develop relationships with key stakeholders and support the leadership teams to drive best practice and to share innovation. 

  • A detailed understanding and experience of multiple automations applications including integration with other equipment and warehouse management systems
  • An up to date knowledge of current thinking, latest innovations and future thinking
  • An ability to communicate simply and clearly with stakeholders at all levels
  • Experience of specification, design, procurement, project management, installation, assurance and maintenance of automation equipment.
  • A strong understanding of Health & Safety and how to approach engineering and maintenance

Skills and Qualifications

  • An Engineering Degree is desired 
  • IEng - Incorporated Engineering accreditation - essential
  • CEng - Chartered Engineer – Desired
  • Previous experience of working with industry bodies – Desired
  • Stakeholder management across a portfolio of projects
  • Project Management skills
