About the role
Leading the team of Functional Controllers within the UK and with matrix accountability across global teams to ensure the accuracy of our financial records and recorded financial performance across the business functions, working with market teams in UK, ROI, CE and India to ensure we report our financial records in compliance with our financial control framework.
Driving consistency and ensuring adherence to group policy and best practice in the way we manage financial control at a functional level across the Group and helping to provide assurance over our financial result.
You will be responsible for
Leading the Functional Control team to ensure they deliver accurate and timely financial results for Operations across the Product, Channels, Property, Technology and Head Office functions in the UK business.
Through matrix management and collaboration, working across the Group with functional control teams in CE, ROI, Booker, One Stop etc to ensure shared best practice, consistency and adherence to group policy.
Work to optimise synergies and ways of working across the functional control teams through standardised processes, reporting and metrics
Support the Finance Director of Group Planning & Control in managing their accountabilities.
Design remediation processes for Key Financial Control failures, as well as Internal and External Audit observations and review and approve process improvements to period close
Work closely with Global Process Owner team to identify and deliver continuous improvement opportunities in Operations accounting processes owned by this role
Ensure control frameworks for Operations are in line with relevant Tesco Group Policies and refreshed at regular intervals, and that controls are operated in line with design
Manage several mid-sized teams in UK and as the role develops across International regions
Work closely with and provide guidance to the Tesco Business Services Team, and as owner and customer of the process ensuring their accountability for delivery to agreed service levels and key performance indicators through the Finance Operating Model
Provide financial control assurance to stakeholders in Business Partnering, Financial Planning & Analysis and other financial control teams, eg Regional & Central Controllers as well as operational teams in the functions supported.
Analysing new and existing business initiatives, challenging assumptions and highlighting risks and opportunities
Ensure period end close activities are planned and executed according to agreed close schedules and that accounting policies are in compliance with local accounting Standards and stated company norms (TGAP).

You will need
- Previous experience of working in a control, audit or technical environment
- Ability to communicate complex ideas simply to a wide range of stakeholders with varying levels of understanding
- Strong integrity, empathy, drive and resilience and a keen sense of ownership. A keen moral compass and ability to “do the right thing”
- Previous people management experience desirable
- Educated to degree level in relevant subject (or relevant experience in industry)
- Professional accounting qualification (or material relevant experience)
- Presenting complex topics/decisions to non-subject expert audiences
- Demonstrable commercial experience
- Working experience of risk based management
- Delivery through material use of shared services
- Working knowledge of process improvement methodologies
