About the role

We are about to start the next chapter for Tesco with ambitious plans to transform the technology landscape. Central to that plan will be ensuring that we establish and apply best practices across projects and programmes.

Reporting into the Programme Director, this is an opportunity for an experienced PMO professional to lead a team who together will ensure that we have the right approach to prioritisation, planning, finance and resourcing.   Adept at building strong relationships you will be required to engage across a broad part of the organisation understanding how Tesco products and services function. The successful candidate will have strong stakeholder management skills, able to influence at all levels and be skilled at overseeing large portfolios.

About The Enabling Functions Team:

Enabling Functions are responsible for bringing out the best in our colleagues by giving them the support they need to perform at the highest level.  By helping our core business across diverse parts of the organisation such as Finance, HR, Property, Legal and Procurement make the most of the latest technological innovations, we have real far-reaching impact across Tesco.  

We provide services on a large scale; as the second largest employer in the UK, our teams are responsible for deploying and managing Payroll systems which support over 300,000 people.  Our finance systems execute billions of pounds worth of payment transactions each year and in the future, we expect the size of our services to continue to grow.

You will be responsible for

Whilst specific responsibilities will be dependent upon the changing needs of the Tesco business, the following provides an overview of the role’s key responsibilities and skills:

Main Responsibilities:

  • Management of the Programme Office
  • Line management of the PMO Team
  • Establishing and maintaining standardised and effective project and programme governance and processes
  • Supporting the Enabling Functions programme team in the delivery of programmes/projects
  • Continuously evaluating programmes/projects to ensure they are meeting company standards, adhering to budgets, and meeting deadlines.
  • Ensure that our processes and procedures are aligned with the governance structures of the respective Enabling functions business areas (People, Finance, Property, Legal etc.)
  • Produce management reporting on headcount and overall budgets (Capex and Opex), finance administration for SOWs, POs etc.
  • Ensure risks and issues, assumptions and dependencies are managed across programmes and portfolios
  • To be responsible for leading and supporting the building of a common set of project tools
  • Creating and maintaining a structured document management system for storage of finance project and business process documentation.
  • Identify where changes can drive both improvements and synergies across teams.

Ideal Skills

  • Advanced Excel skills include VB, macros
  • Exceptional reporting skills for programs and financial forecasting
  • People leadership skills
  • Problem solving, creative and strategic thinking.
  • Proven track record of establishing and managing an effective Programme Management office in a large organisation.
  • Commercial understanding of budgeting, control and strategic planning
  • Strong influencing and stakeholder management
  • Experience of building credible relationships and influencing senior management & leadership teams
  • Flexibility, ability to plan and organise, responsiveness, creativity, self-starter
  • Ability to demonstrate strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills to all levels of seniority and disciplines within the organisation.
  • Experience of enterprise level Project Portfolio Management tools
  • Organisation and managing multiple priorities
  • A successful and proven track record in working to tight deadlines in a busy challenging environment

Qualifications

  • Certification achieved in recognised PMO, Project Management methodology, Prince 2 Practitioner or similar a distinct advantage.
