About the role

We are looking for a data privacy lawyer to join the Tesco Data Privacy Team, which sits within the wider Legal & Compliance function. The successful individual will join a team of privacy subject matter experts (a mix of lawyers, risk managers and compliance officers).  Our work is predominately focused on supporting the Tesco Stores business, but includes working on projects across the Tesco group of companies in the UK and elsewhere.

You can expect close collaboration with the business, a diverse and often high-profile workload, and a brief to be curious. An ability to build a range of relationships, prioritise workloads (to focus your resource on the key privacy risks in our business) and provide practical risk-based “can do” advice is essential.   

This role is a 9-12 Month FTC and ideally we would be looking for someone who is immediately available or on a short notice period.

You will be responsible for

  • Delivering privacy advice to a range of stakeholders and business functions (including the people, technology, marketing, customer and operations teams);
  • Providing subject matter expertise on PIAs, supporting on complex data requests, managing high risk personal data incidents, providing guidance to our contract/commercial lawyers, as well as leading on regulatory complaints and investigations; and
  • Providing strategic direction and being the legal lead on high profile data privacy focussed project, delivering both on the customer/Clubcard data strategy and a range of colleague data transformation programmes.

You will need

The successful individual will have a strong understanding and application of data privacy laws, with a track record of being able to convert this into practical risk-based advice for a range of stakeholders in a commercial environment.

The candidate will be a fully qualified lawyer with:

  • Ideally 3 or more years of privacy legal experience;
  • A passion for data privacy, and interest in learning more and doing the right thing for our customers and colleagues;
  • An ability to engage with a range of (often senior) stakeholders, to build key relationships and maintain the visibility of the Data Privacy Team across the business;
  • Experience of working within an often challenging commercial environment, with a delivery focused approach to work.
