About the role

We are looking for a Design Manager who can see the possibility in every opportunity - from large ground-breaking projects on big budgets to the small incremental quick wins that will provide thousands of colleagues with immediate improvements.

As Design Manager – store operations, you will be part of the colleague experience team that crafts the Tesco tools and services that are used by hundreds of thousands of our Tesco colleagues every day.

In this role, you have the opportunity to be strategic yet hands-on, you have a passion for craft and design and most of all shape a clear vision of the future for user experience. You will guide our future research, develop design processes, and encourage your team to together push the boundaries of what’s possible. You will be a mentor for dedicated members of your team, collaborate with leaders of Product, Data Science and Engineering teams to create innovative experiences across all of Tesco products.

With genuine appetite for sophisticated information, you will have experience in deep user research, facilitation, conceptualisation, and technical implementation as well as a passion and energy for design and visual communication of your ideas. Insights and data (quant and qual) are what drives our team and you will use it to empower your decisions to support and improve the lives of people when coupled with a clear understanding of their evolving needs.

You will be responsible for

  • Ensure dedicated focus on human centred design that always meet our user needs that serve our users a little better every day for your domain
  • Ensures and guides teams to effectively identify and understand the user needs and opportunities are evidence based
  • Accountable for all UX output from your team providing an effortless and valuable user experience
  • Support strategy for key projects through design direction, bring the vision to life and guide other teams to do the same
  • Ensuring team are solving the right problems in the best way for our users and business, while seeking to prevent or minimise development risks.
  • Supports development of business level KPIs across teams
  • Network and evangelise Design methodologies and the team's achievements across Tesco and the broader Design community
  • Demonstrate strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills to all levels of seniority and subject areas within the organisation.
  • Promotes and creates environment for multi-disciplinary teamwork to create & improve user experience and outcomes that are in-line with our design principles
  • Critique & challenge product & strategic roadmaps and upward communication of potential initiatives and opportunities
  • Effectively coordinate, facilitate and lead ceremonies, peer/design reviews and workshops with all design & research teams, business owners and business partners
  • Drives continual improvement across teams
  • Recruit, on-board and line management within your team
  • Continuously seek to improve research, design, and development processes to gain efficiency, remove obstacles, and simplify workflows
  • Work with design leadership and ensure we have the appropriate abilities and headcount correctly allocated within budget constraints
  • Be an advocate for correct use of and contribution to our design system
  • Lead by example, demonstrating Tesco values, provide guidance and mentoring to help the team focus on our mission, achieve their best and strive for excellence
  • Provide support & mentorship for junior team members, help to define objectives and help lead professional & personal development

You will need

  • Varied design research techniques, workshop planning, conceptual design, prototyping, detailed design, user testing, and implementation
  • Expert IA skills, journey mapping, user flows, sketching skills, wireframes, and translating them to fully functional prototypes that are used throughout our design process to validate your solutions against user needs while ensuring your solutions are technically feasible.
  • Expertise in carrying out primary methods of customer research
  • Experience running and leading impactful research & design teams
  • Experience facilitating and leading peer/design reviews and workshops with business owners, business partners and teams from other design and research subject areas
  • Expert-level knowledge of the UX design, Research & Visual Design subject area, standards, libraries and underlying theories in interaction design, usability, psychology, visual and information design, and human factors
