About the role

We are looking for a UX Design & Research Manager to join our Shopping Design Leadership team. Reporting into our Head of Design for the Shopping team, you’ll be leading a large, talented, and multi-disciplined design team. Someone who can see the possibility in every opportunity - from large groundbreaking projects on big budgets to the small incremental quick wins that will provide millions of our customers and colleagues with immediate improvements.

You’ll have a well-rounded design background and be a natural born leader, with the gravitas and ability lead and encourage your team to build products and experiences that are compelling and easy to use. You’ll be super passionate about the wellbeing of your team, always supporting them in their development and creating an environment (both virtual and in-person) for them to thrive with a focus on best-in-class design culture & craft.

You’ll collaborate with other teams across our Technology function – Product, Engineering, Program and Data Science as well as the wider business in a fast-paced agile environment. You’ll be a smart, compassionate creative with a real a passion for craft and design and phenomenal story-telling skills. You’ll always champion a human-centered approach to problem-solving throughout all stages of the discovery and design process and most of all have a clear vision of the future for user experience.

With genuine appetite for solving sophisticated problems, you will have experience in research, workshop facilitation, ideation and technical implementation as well as a passion and energy for design and visual communication of your ideas. Insights and data is what drives us and you will use it to empower your decisions to support and enhance the lives of our customers communities and planet when coupled with a clear understanding of evolving needs. You’re no stranger to web technologies and using these for creating in-browser prototypes.

You will be responsible for

  • Accountable for the success of your design team in providing an effortless and valuable user experience
  • Ensure a dedicated focus on the human cantered design practice and guide teams to effectively identify and understand user needs and opportunities are always evidence based
  • Support strategy for key projects through design direction, bring the vision to life and guide other teams to do the same
  • Ensuring team are solving the right problems in the best way for our users and business, while seeking to prevent or minimise development risks.
  • Support development of business level important metrics across teams
  • Network and evangelise Design best practice and the team's achievements across Tesco and the broader Tech community
  • Demonstrate strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills to all levels of seniority and subject areas within the organisation.
  • Promotes and creates environment for multi-disciplinary collaboration to create & improve user experience and outcomes that are in-line with our design principles
  • Critique & challenge product & strategic roadmaps and upward communication of potential initiatives and opportunities
  • Effectively coordinate, facilitate, and lead ceremonies, peer/design reviews and workshops with design & research teams, business owners and business partners
  • Recruit, on-board and line management within your team
  • Continuously seek to improve research, design, and development processes to gain efficiency, remove obstacles, and simplify workflows
  • Work with leadership to ensure we have the appropriate skills and headcount correctly allocated within budget constraints and contribute to prioritisation of roadmaps
  • Be an advocate for correct use of and contribution to our design system
  • Lead by example, demonstrating Tesco values, provide guidance and mentoring to help the team focus on our mission, achieve their best and strive for excellence
  • Provide support & mentorship for your team help to define objectives and help lead professional & personal development
  • Hire and develop design contractors and brief agencies where required

You will need

  • Building and leading teams of at least five or more designers, with direct line and performance management responsibilities
  • Deep understand of practice and process for design discovery, research + synthesis, workshop planning and facilitation, sprint planning, visual design and ideation, prototyping, user testing and implementation
  • Solid understanding of web technologies and software development life cycle would be a phenomenal advantage
  • Experienced in agile scrum work flow
  • Demonstrate strong written, verbal communication and presentation skills with the gravitas to influence and inspire all levels of seniority and subject areas
  • Bachelor’s degree in Interaction Design, Computer Interaction, Behavioural Psychology or equivalent related proven experience
  • 8+ years of experience
  • Building and leading teams of at least 10 or more designers
