About the role

As a Product Counsel, you will work on a broad range of legal matters for our Product team, influencing key partners and providing commercial and legally robust solutions.

This role is to balance legal risk and commercial benefit and to provide timely and clear legal advice that is solution-driven. The role involves a good breadth of work as well as the opportunity to work autonomously. We are looking for someone who is able to get under the skin of a captivating business as a go-to business lawyer for our UK Food business.

You will be responsible for

  • Spotting legal issues, and providing creative and solutions-orientated legal advice and direction, collaborating with our specialists (e.g. Privacy and Competition lawyers) where necessary.
  • Advising management on risks, sophisticated agreement structures and company policies.
  • Negotiating and handling a range of high value contracts including: concessions; licensing arrangements; wholesale agreements and supply and distribution agreements.
  • Supporting Product to embed their ethics and compliance agenda.
  • Supporting on dispute resolution, such as the investigation of claims from suppliers, including research into the matter and review of supporting evidence to assess the strength of a claim, drafting correspondence and entering into settlement agreements (poor performance, product quality issues, insolvency etc).
  • Developing and delivering training to the teams.
  • Providing regulatory advice (including GCSOP) and horizon scanning emerging issues likely to impact our businesses, and mitigate their risk through consultations and influencing.
  • Seeking opportunities to simplify our ways of working, for example by developing standard templates and co-ordinating the sharing of knowledge.

You will need

To be a Qualified lawyer, with a wide variety of commercial experience, preferably in an in-house environment. We are looking for someone with an in-depth knowledge of the contract regulatory and legislative landscape, who is able to explain complex concepts to business colleagues in simple terms and influence partners positively. You will need to be able to work independently and collaboratively in a collegial, fast-paced environment and comfortable carrying a varied and sometimes unexpected workload.
