About the role

Climate change is the greatest environmental threat our planet faces today. As a multinational food company and retailer, we have an important role to play in tackling climate change by decarbonising our business; throughout our operations and across our supply chains.

We have an exciting opportunity for a passionate environmental professional to join our Environment team as Climate Change Manager (Supply Chain). The Environment team at Tesco works across the business and with external stakeholders to develop and implement our industry leading sustainability commitments to tackle some of the biggest environmental challenges facing the planet.

In 2017 we announced our science-based climate change targets covering our operations and supply chain (agriculture and manufacturing). In doing so, we became the first big company globally to set climate change ambitions for our own operations, in line with a 1.5 degree trajectory.

You will be responsible for

Reporting to the Head of Environment, you will work alongside the Climate Change Manager (Operations) to develop and deliver an integrated business strategy to decarbonise our supply chain (addressing Scope 3 emissions) in line with our ambitious targets. You will work closely with relevant business functions and with key suppliers to inspire ownership and influence action on climate change.

The successful candidate will be a self-starting team-player, with a strong technical background in climate change and/or carbon accounting, and exceptional engagement and influencing skills.

The main areas of responsibility include:

1. Subject matter expert

  • Subject matter expert and key contact within the Tesco Group for all technical issues relating to our climate change agenda, specifically supply chain/Scope 3 (e.g. supporting colleagues and suppliers with policy requirements, respond to queries from external stakeholders such as customers, media etc.). 
  • Lead the development and delivery of strategy and key initiatives to support supplier decarbonisation efforts (including transitioning to renewable electricity).
  • Develop and implement supply chain mitigation plans addressing risks identified in the annual TCFD climate risks report (TCFD = Taskforce on Climate-related Financial Disclosures).

2. Supplier engagement and climate strategy delivery

  • Lead supplier and category engagement to achieve our science-based climate change goals for our supply chain.
  • Drive a renewed focus on achieving our Manufacturing targets with strategic suppliers.
  • Work with the Responsible Sourcing Manager (Sustainable Agriculture) to address agricultural emissions in line with Tesco’s decarbonisation targets.

3. Policy development and implementation

  • Continuously review the internal and external environment to develop and implement effective policies and strategies for making progress towards our net zero commitment.  

4. Industry engagement and leadership

  • Identify relevant forums and opportunities to strengthen industry engagement and collective action to tackle Scope 3 emissions within the food sector
  • Represent Tesco in relevant industry forums

5. Data management and reporting

  • Manage the process of collecting and analysing trend data on supply chain carbon reduction including renewable electricity initiatives.
  • Manage feedback to suppliers on carbon reduction performance.

6. Management of the Climate Change workstream of our partnership with WWF

  • We have an exciting and industry leading partnership with WWF. The candidate will be responsible for working with WWF experts, alongside the Climate Change Manager (Operations) to progress action to achieve our climate change related metrics within our Sustainable Basket ambitions.

You will need

Education and Professional experience

  • Relevant Master’s degree in sustainability, environmental management, etc.
  • Experience working in sustainability within a retail/FMCG context
  • Experience working in sustainability within the supply chain/manufacturing
  • Experience working with related topics within an NGO/not-for-profit sector

Technical Requirements

  • Experience in developing climate strategies and roadmaps for consumer-facing brands/businesses
  • Knowledge of anthropogenic climate change and current trends seen in the impacts of climate change on ecosystems and the availability of natural resources
  • Excellent communication and engagement skills, able to engender trust and foster collaboration
  • Prior participation in external engagements relating to climate change
  • Knowledge of legislative and regulatory landscape on climate change
  • Experience with data management and reporting (internal compliance, CDP)
