About the role

A rare and exciting opportunity has arisen in our Group Comms team for a Local Communications Manager - London & South East on a maternity contract.

This role helps shape the ongoing Tesco community narrative externally, creating more opportunities to tell a positive story and demonstrate the impact of the work we do within our local communities. Within this, you ensure that the high-profile multiple property development programmes we are now rolling out across our estate will be communicated to the right external audience, including the retail property market. You will promote and protect Tesco's reputation and handle sensitive queries from media and stakeholders.

You help build networks to enable Tesco to have positive conversations about our business with a number of local and national stakeholders and representatives of the retail, property and charity sectors.

You will be responsible for

  •  Acting as a spokesperson and representative for Tesco across my region.
  • Promoting, defending and advising the business on reputational issues.
  • Promoting the work of Tesco across my region and bringing our national initiatives to life in targeted and relevant local campaigns, with a particular focus on working closely with the Community team and our charity partners to support, communicate and advance each of our core community programmes and pillars.
  • Identifying relevant and impactful opportunities in media or other channels where we can widen audience awareness of our community reach, partnerships, investments and role our stores play. A significant part of this should be building relationships with strategic local authorities, including the GLA, and working with Government Relations to engage relevant stakeholders and support the Government Relations strategy.
  • Supporting the property team in the execution of their development strategies across London and the South East. Developing and managing a communications plan that supports our proposed store growth across the UK and our readiness to acquire new sites.
  • Owning and resolving escalations/correspondence from local MPs, Councils and other stakeholders regarding constituency/local matters.
  • Developing and delivering specific communications that help people understand the proactive way Tesco work, for a local audience. Working with our communications agency to create targeted and relevant local press releases across my region, supporting our wider messaging.
  • Showing and demonstrating where and how our story telling has had impact and results and where we could do more through our networks, in key cities, in communities that need more support.

You will need

Essential:
Media background either in journalism or PR and experience of media handling.
Public affairs and/or solid political understanding with experience of local Government communications, particularly the planning process.
Excellent writing and communication skills with a blend of proactive, corporate and property, retail and or third sector experience.
Influencing and collaboration skills including managing external stakeholders.

Desirable:
Experience of the property planning process, local council planning would be advantageous as would knowledge of the food retail sector.
