About the role

We have a fantastic opportunity for a Procurement Manager to join the Tesco team.  This role will require an extensive packaging or consumables Procurement category background, with strengths and experience in packaging, commodities and product development preferred.

Having developed strong working relationships with the stakeholders, and built comprehensive category plans, this role is pivotal in delivering commercial excellence whilst meeting critical business requirements that enable Tesco to operate every day.

The Tesco Procurement team is leading the Tesco cost base transformation as it targets a £500m cost base reduction by 2022/23.  The role may require an element of national and international travel (Covid allowing) in line with international buying strategies, global sourcing and supplier relationships.

You will be responsible for

  • Develop and deliver procurement strategies, great value contracts and implement projects which truly support the Tesco transformation priorities 
  • Writing and delivering the Procurement plan for the goods you are responsible for and leading the strategy and plans across the Consumables team
  • Assess the opportunity to maximise scale and work with Tesco international teams, partners and subsidiary business’
  • Controlling the business spend through improved use of tools and processes
  • Be seen as a Procurement category leader internally and externally. Being the go-to person for category knowledge and keeping up to date with key news, developments and legislation in the market which will affect the category
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with the internal stakeholder base to understand and influence requirements.
  • Working closely with a Technical Manager to ensure all goods sourced are fit for purpose and meet Tesco’s Technical and Ethical standards
  • Support the central packaging team to deliver Tesco’s packaging and materials strategy within Consumables – a fundamental part of Tesco’s environmental and sustainability strategies
  • Ensure strong relationships with suppliers continue to be maintained, developed and enhanced to ensure continued suitability and create greater value
  • Source potential new suppliers and assess their sustainability to supply Tesco, minimising risk and optimising quality and service
  • Continually assess and review the supply base to manage total cost, quality and availability
  • Managing a team of two Procurement Managers and one Procurement Graduate

You will need

  • Commercial knowledge and negotiation skills
  • Supplier relationship and performance management
  • Category Planning and Contract management
  • Cross functional working & stakeholder engagement
  • Proven track record of delivering negotiations and contracts within procurement
  • High standards of ethics and personal integrity
  • Passion for development of self and others
  • Several years experience in Procurement/buying experience preferably in Consumables, Product and Packaging
