About the role

The Competition & Regulatory Counsel provides strategic and operational advice and guidance on competition and regulatory law issues.  The role works closely with Legal teams in the UK and around the Group (including ROI, Central Europe, Asia, Tesco Bank and Tesco Mobile), along with business stakeholders.

You will be responsible for

Competition Law:

  • Provide advice and guidance on competition law issues in relation to commercial, property, corporate, strategy, innovation, litigation and other fields of business activity in the UK.
  • Support competition law investigations and merger clearances before competition authorities
  • Prepare responses to requests for information from Competition Authorities.
  • Support other business units with competition law advice
  • Support the development of the competition law compliance programme and support its implementation around the Group, including training programmes and other key controls.
  • Support competition law assurance activities, working with other colleagues in Legal, Group Audit and external advisors.

Regulatory & Groceries Supply Code of Practice (GSCOP):

  • Develop and support the implementation of the GSCOP compliance programme, including developing GSCOP guidance, risk registers, training and other key controls.
  • Draft regulatory submissions to the Groceries Code Adjudicator and support the investigation of GSCOP risk issues.
  • Support GSCOP assurance activities, working with other colleagues in Legal, Group Audit and external advisors.

EU Law Including Free Movement & State Aid:

  • Working with external counsel, provide guidance and advice on EC law issues, including state aid and free movement issues, including supporting EU law challenges made by trade associations and other bodies.

General:

  • Conduct ongoing horizon-scanning for emerging risks and issues.
  • Raising awareness of competition and regulatory issues with stakeholders around the business.
  • Supporting internal reporting on competition and regulatory issues.

You will need

The Competition & Regulatory Counsel will:

  • Be an experienced competition lawyer, ideally with previous experience in-house
  • Have in-depth knowledge of the UK and European competition landscape
  • Preferably have experience of UK and EU regulatory law (for example, supplier legislation)
  • Be able to explain complex concepts to business colleagues in simple terms
  • Work collaboratively across the business to positively influence stakeholders
  • Work independently and collaboratively in a collegial, fast-paced team environment  across all Group businesses
  • Be comfortable carrying a varied and sometimes unpredictable workload, which may require occasional travel
