About the role
Tesco’s Group Technology function is responsible to support, maintain and improve the group’s needs around Information Technology and drive innovation. You can expect close collaboration with the business, a highly diverse workload, and a brief to innovate and improve existing processes.
As the Legal Counsel you'll be supporting tech and innovation related transactions and projects, as well as facilitating the implementation of simplified engagement processes, stream-lined documentation and improved governance/policies and providing specialised tech legal advice/guidance.
You will be responsible for
- Advising on a varied range of tech contracts, including complex, high profile and business critical ones.
- To provide first-line support on disputes, liaising with the specialist in-house dispute resolution team and external advisors as necessary.
- To provide general legal advice and support on a range of issues including IP, Data Protection, IT litigation, TUPE.
- Considering stakeholders concerns and spotting other issues: working with the business (not just for them) and adding value;
- Thinking “outside of the box” to come up with practical and innovative commercial solutions to problems;
- Simplification and innovation; supporting innovation and use of technology to simplify and improve the provision of legal services;
- Developing and maintaining excellent relationships with different business units;
- Engaging with and supporting other lawyers across the international Tesco group; and
- Outsourcing and managing the outsourcing of matters to external law firms where necessary (including ensuring we get value for money).
You will need
- The successful candidate should PQE gained at a leading law firm or in-house.
- In-house experience (which may have been gained on secondment) preferred but not essential.
- Strong enthusiasm for Tech, Innovation and wide-ranging commercial contracts experience is essential. An experience and understanding of corporate matters are also welcome.
- Must thrive on working as a team, in a dynamic and fast moving environment.
- The role requires an ability to build credibility with very experienced internal and external stakeholders.
- A calm demeanour and an ability to work collaboratively under pressure are desirable.
